Omega-3 improves peripheral nerve injury recovery

Tuesday, January 17, 2012. In the January 11, 2012 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, researchers at Queen Mary University of London report that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which include eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), may help protect peripheral nerves from injury and stimulate recovery. Damage to the peripheral nerves, which transmit signals between the brain and spinal cord, can cause symptoms ranging from pain to paralysis, and recovery is often limited. Source:lef.org

Sardines – Rx Effect: Lower triglycerides, raise HDL

The Evidence: The omega-3 fatty acids in cold-water fish are crucial for heart health, and sardines have among the highest levels. These “good fats” lower harmful triglycerides, raise protective HDL, reduce potentially fatal heart arrhythmias, and tamp down inflammation. It’s inflammation that ultimately destabilizes plaque, causing it to rupture and produce a heart-attack-inducing clot. Though you can get omega-3s from plant sources such as flaxseed, the “long chain” omega-3s in fish are far more powerful. A large Danish study last year in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found a 38% reduction in ischemic heart disease among women who consumed the most. Omega-3 Fatty Acids Could Prevent and Treat Nerve Damage, Research Suggests

ScienceDaily (Jan. 11, 2012) — Research from Queen Mary, University of London suggests that omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish oil, have the potential to protect nerves from injury and help them to regenerate. When nerves are damaged because of an accident or injury, patients experience pain, weakness and muscle paralysis which can leave them disabled, and recovery rates are poor. Source:sciencedaily.com
