Omega-3 fats shown to improve cognition and memory in young adults

(NaturalNews) The long chain omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA have been shown to effectively lower the risk of heart disease and heart attack and reduce the occurrence of dementia in aging adults. Omega-3 fats improve systemic inflammation to aid vascular elasticity and reduce the risk of blood clots that can result in a cardiovascular event. Additionally, the fats are preferentially incorporated into the cell wall matrix of neurons to aid neurotransmitter communications and the flow of oxygen and nutrients for efficient cellular metabolism. Vitamin C Prevents Bone Loss in Animal Models

ScienceDaily (Oct. 9, 2012) — Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have shown for the first time in an animal model that vitamin C actively protects against osteoporosis, a disease affecting large numbers of elderly women and men in which bones become brittle and can fracture. “The medical world has known for some time that low amounts of vitamin C can cause scurvy and brittle bones, and that higher vitamin C intake is associated with higher bone mass in humans, “said Dr. Zaidi. “What this study shows is that large doses of vitamin C, when ingested orally by mice, actively stimulate bone formation to protect the skeleton. It does this by inducing osteoblasts, or premature bone cells, to differentiate...

Alzheimer’s Starts Earlier For Heavy Drinkers, Smokers

Heavy drinkers and heavy smokers develop Alzheimer’s disease years earlier than people with Alzheimer’s who do not drink or smoke heavily, according to new research. “These results are significant because it’s possible that if we can reduce or eliminate heavy smoking and drinking, we could substantially delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease for people and reduce the number of people who have Alzheimer’s at any point in time,” said study author Ranjan Duara, MD, of the Wien Center for Alzheimer’s Disease at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, FL, and Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. Probiotics may help cut body fat levels: RCT data

Daily probiotic yogurt consumption may improve energy metabolism and reduce body fat levels by up to 4%, says results of a placebo-controlled, double-blind cross-over clinical trial in Canada. Yogurt containing the ‘novel probiotic’ strains Lactobacillus amylovorus or Lactobacillus fermentum for six weeks was associated with significantly reduced body fat mass, with the greatest reduction seen for L. amylovorus, according to findings published in the Journal of Functional Foods. Control blood pressure naturally, not with drugs

(NaturalNews) A recent New York Times article is calling for more people to control their blood pressure (BP). According to the CDC, 67 million Americans have high BP, and 36 million with uncontrolled high BP could greatly add to our healthcare burden. They argue for control of BP through drugs, but diet and exercise are far better options. While paying lip service to diet and exercise, this call to action is obviously tied to the pharmaceutical industry, which could profit greatly from getting more people on drugs. They insist that medication should be part of the treatment, that drugs effectively treat patients with severe hypertension, and that treating high BP causes few major problems. Nevertheless, it is always best to...
